Sen. Richard Blumenthal is joining the call for escalator safety after an accident at a retail complex two years ago left a little girl permanently disfigured.
Security video from a local business complex shows how it takes only seconds for the child to break free from a babysitter and get her fingers stuck in the mechanical steps.
Susie, 2, is seen running towards the escalator and takes a fall right at the most dangerous point - where the device's mechanical teeth are turned by the escalator's drive wheel - creating a treacherous point responsible for killing and maiming dozens of people in the U.S. every single year.
As a result, she lost some of her fingers.
Though Blumenthal say many tragic accidents are caused by defects in the escalators themselves, many others are caused by parents and caregivers failing to use enough caution.
He says he's encouraging places like airports and retailers to make sure their escalators are routinely inspected and in full compliance with OSHA regulations.
Blumenthal says proper signs are just as important as it is for parents to be vigilant.
